If the U.S. does end up losing the Iraq war, it will be be for exactly the same reasons that we lost in Vietnam. In Vietnam, U.S. troops were stationed in firebases out in the middle of nowhere and only went into the villages about once a month. Therefore, the VC just left when the Americans were coming and came back when we left. In Iraq, for the longest time, our troops spent most of their time in "forward operating bases," from which they launched occasional patrols. Sound familiar? However, since the "surge," U.S. forces have been stationed out in the worst neighborhoods where they are always there to watch out for terrorists. However, they only have enough troops to do this in Baghdad and Anbar, so the terrorists will just move elsewhere. We'd need about 250,000 troops to secure Iraq, but the Democrats would never let us expand the military to the point where we could do that. So, until then, all we can do is cross our fingers and use what we've got.

It's what we get for playing nice.

Playing nice?!? You mean, having a government which is sort of accountable to the public every four years and an electorate which isn't completely and utterly brain-dead and masochistic?

  You're a sick fuck dipshit.

NO, NO, NO, by playing nice, he means not carpetbombing the shit out of sand niggers who think the Americans are fucking gay.

Oh, and as for Vietnam, YOU STILL FUCKING LOST, quit making up excuses.

You should watch your mouth; it would take us all of 3 days to take over Canada lol.

LOL cocky Americans. Wasn't this the idea with Iraq?  America COULD NOT take over Canada. Not unless it nuked us and then America would get Nuked and everyone would be fucked.

Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothin'
But build to destroy
You play with my world
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled
Fear to bring children
Into the world
For threatening my baby
Unborn and unnamed
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good
Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
I think you will find
When your death takes its toll
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your deathbed
And I'll stand o'er your grave
'Til I'm sure that you're dead

RANT TIME!

As pointed out before, the American 'war-machine' is more than capable of completely iradicating the threat, thus the strength of its own militant power is to be revered. However the myth itself of its indestructability has been tested in this feild and broken, because psychological warefare IS an important component in all warfare strategies, especially since this is concerning Guerilla warfare, a strategy not highly understood by the Super Power.

Face it ladies and gentlemen, Guerilla Warfare has been well deployed in the last half of the century and well off into the new, from the Apartheid Era to Veitnam itself. Its also been proven to be highly effective against armed forces, though is governing nature is far to ambiguous to stabilize itself as a form of government on most cases (Anarchsist handiwork). Even if one bombs a supposed headquarters of terrorists one still cant ever be sure they have beaten them.

And Guerilla warfare wins its battles not by the old "My horse is bigger than your horse" idea, rather by 'outsmarting its enemies and atacking it to its core of operations'. Compared to the past where millions of men where just simply sent to their deaths, paying the bill of war in how much blood was spilt.

If American hopes to win this war totally, it needs to root out the radical factions within it, and pacify any instability in its social relations with the people.

The American occupation does face a major threat from the infrastructure of the country itself, since it has been on some cases represented in a critical point of view by the media, and mainly it lacks the sufficient intelligence to understand the processes about the functions of their oponents, and their failure in dealing with Radical propaganda with effective political diplomacy.

Then again, was this war ever about Diplomacy? Is it simply, as others have said, a bid to gain wealth and valuable resources? Maybe so, politics does look for personal gain before entering a war, but the main ideology is that American is protecting her national security and her national pride, which is acceptable and understandable since terrorism does indeed exsist with malicious purposes against the western world.

Besides, one could say the occupying forces are trying to change some legal customs of their culture by force-an action which is garanteed to infuriate the communities and give social power to the radical factions. I agree that some of the practises in Iraq are questionable and bordering inhumane cruelty, but people dont simply CHANGE because you want them too. Diplomacy is more effective that nukes and gunfure. let the people decide they WANT the change; which in respect the american presence in its country is atempting to help it when there arent bombs and body bits flying everywhere.

Just joining this discussion and, frankly, not caring to read over the past six pages as half-illiterate posts and make a response to only those that displayed some measure of intellectual aptitude:

No.
No myth was destroyed.

We spent the past sixty years building up for a conventional war of the most apocalyptic scale.

Keyword: Conventional.

We're stilling faring far better than our past-equal, the Russians, in Afghanistan.

This is like bitching that your G5 Mac, which kicks ass at video-processing and graphics-design, can't play Bioshock.

the myth hasn't been shattered. the united states military might is based in the cold war concept of a Total Conventional War.... not a small, localized insurgency

Anyone who thinks we are being militarily defeated in Iraq (or in Vietnam, for that matter) needs to seriously wake up.

The only reason we aren't bombing the hell out of Baghdad right now is because of the media and how they would seize on it to make the U.S. look like brutal murderers.

A loss in Iraq, if there is a loss in Iraq, will be psychological, as was our failure in Vietnam.

I think that the war needs to stop, because the war affects families in the US and the citizens in the middle east. Obviously, we are not there fighting over oil or to be a dominant country, we are there to cause trouble. Bush needs to bring our soilders home and stop stalling with bullshit excuses. Bush needs to be impeached, because he is not a great or brightest president.

Don't you think that the real flaw in this whole situation is that nether side is morally right?
The Americans have killed people who had no involvement in the conflict and violated human rights in G bay.
The CIA also put Saddam in power after the first gulf war.

Saddam and his followers are responsible for mass murder and the suppression of the Iraqi people. The acts of genocide they have committed are not justified by the Koran even in its most literal form.
Both sides have proven that they will violate there own ideology's in the pursuit of victory.

The place that the battle was lost and won was not in the cities or the countryside, it was in the subconscious.
The simple fact is that what is offered by radical Islam is more appealing than capitalism to the people of Iraq. Many people within the system have disliked the change to democracy simply because it was forced upon them were as they were born into the state as it was before.

So to truly see if this war is a stalemate, we must wait to see if America's enemies have any better fortune in there war on western soil were the mindset of the populous is not so much in there favour.
