More of the fact that the lights are pointed at the wall.

Are your bulbs just too bright?  I used to have that problem and would bounce my lights off the walls as well, but you can fix that with lower powered bulbs.  Better yet, if you're really cool like me, then you can just get a few black/uv lights.  I like a combination of white/black lights to switch between pending on the situation.
