So much jealous bitchiness in this thread! I am sure that if any of you were good enough to be accepted into an Ivy League institution that you would jump upon such an opportunity.

For serious.

Plus, for a good portion of the population, Harvard is either free or dirt cheap. That'll just make it all the harder to get into this year, though.

Good luck guys!

No, it's because I think it's ridiculous that their tuitions are so high and they're so 'elite' when it's the same damn education I can get here. I just don't understand what makes those schools more superior or special than where I go.

Any private school costs about the same that they do. Its not an Ivy specific thing. Ivies have exponentially better endowments though, so they can afford amazing financial aid for those that need it at all and can fund things like unpaid internships, study abroad, or whatever else you want to do.

The selectivity alone weeds out a lot of the idiots and less ambitious, which makes for a better environment. And then theres the research and prestige that attracts the top of the top as far as professors and faculty as well, which enhances the experience. It looks good on a resume, will help you get the job, internship, or grad school placement that you want.

Just because someone goes to Harvard or Yale doesn't mean they aren't an idiot. I knew several people who do extraordinarily well academically but are dumb as a brick. It's just a load of elitist bullshit, because quite frankly, I would want an employer to look at my skills and how well I perform in my field, not which prestigious school I come from, since in the end that's what matters.

I strongly agree with your last point.

I agree with you, but how would an employer know your skills how well you do in your field? Going to a more prestigious school may show that one works harder than the other.

Because that's what you spend four years of college doing. Building a body of knowledge and a work portfolio.

Here's the problem with that line of thinking. If a student comes from less than ideal circumstances, doesn't really apply themselves until late, etc...

You are basing all of your decision off of what a individual accomplished up to their junior year of high school. By the time most finish college, they are a completely different person.

And the fact that good college students don't always make good employees. There's so much more to it.

The sheer elitism associated with those schools sickens me.

Shut the fuck up. Some people who go to top universities (and by some, I mean many), are very chill people who are smart and work hard. Sure, their intelligence and hard work is partially the result of privilege, but all success in life is the result of privilege (be it financial, intellectual, or otherwise). Don't stereotype them as elitist; they are simply elite students. In the same vein, you wouldn't like it if they at top universities stereotyped all students at lower-ranked schools as stupid, and saying they were all (at lower-ranked schools) laid-back would be foolish.

Therein lies the problem. What makes those schools more superior are more challenging environments because only the most ambitious apply, good facilities because of large endowments, great connections because our country and the world is already dependent on the idea of these schools as being the best, and to be honest, better classes and often better professors.

That is not to say you can't get a great education at a non-Ivy or even non-Top-100/Top Liberal Arts College school. You can. But it is a tad less likely, and the networking/connections/super-intellectual environment might be nowhere to be found.
