I hope your dad will look back someday when he gets really old and regret his entire life and what he did to your mother and how much of a man you were to stand up to him. Guilt and regret can kill him from inside out.

man you got balls. i hit my dad as well. however the fact that you had the balls to apologize to him, makes you much more of a man than myself at the time. my dad used to hit my sister and my mom. then one day he cocked back like he was going to hit me, and i ducked and weaved and cocked him with a big left hook, and he went down. he never touched me, or my mom or sister again. its been three years since he talked to me, and three years since i tried to talk to him. and after reading your story, i called him, and spoke to him, and apologized, and he got up and came over, and apologized to me, and we talked for 3 hours. things will never be the same, but the healing process has to start somewhere. good luck to you.
