If you hold really anything else besides hope higher, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.  Materialistic things can fade away.  They aren't permanent.  Hope is permanent if you hold onto.  That's what life is about.  Enjoying the good when it's good, and holding on to hope when it isn't.

There isn't any hope though, nothing we do matters for anything, we could do anything but eventually it won't matter. Why do we bother? I am feeling really depressed right now because I don't see a purpose in life.

I understand completely because I struggle with the exact same things. But I've spent a lot of time thinking about it, and I can offer you my best insight into it.

Alright, first of all, what we do DOES matter for something. Is that something sometimes rather insignificant in terms of the whole universe or even the planet? Yes, absolutely. Our impact on the world around us is very localized. But within our circle of influence, we do play a big role. As they say (prepare for overly cliche line here), "To the world you may just be one person, but to one person you are the world." If you cannot conceptualize what impact you have on your family and friends, try to imagine what impact your disapperance would have on them. It would be rather significant. You mean a lot to some people, and your existence has made thiers better in some way. I think that in itself definitely means something; just the fact alone that you have touched someone enough to make their world a better place. Would you agree?

And why do we bother? We bother because of that impact we have. Maybe it's human instinct, or maybe it's something higher, but humans have the ability to realize their own potential. That is a distinct trait that we possess that other species do not. Sometimes this ability gets clouded by something like depression or a setback or failure. But it does not disappear and it never will. You will always have the ability....if you allow yourself, to pursue your dreams. Additionally, you will always have the ability to hold on to hope and hope is what will get you through this. You say that you have no purpose, but the fact alone that you are questioning what your purpose is shows that you do still have hope. You might be down on yourself, but you do realize that there must be some sort of purpose out there.

Hope that made some sense....I tend to start rambling on the subject.

I honestly think the importance of my dissapearance would matter at most two weeks before it was over.

I don't think you can conceptualize the impact of your own disappearance fully.  This is primarily due to the fact that we are not aware of our future.  Who is to say that you won't go on to do something like cure AIDS?  You cannot see that as a component of you existence yet, obviously, because it has not happened.  However the world would be significantly impacted by you, should it happen.  Granted, that is an extreme scenario, and you're probably sitting there saying "Ya ok...not gonna happen".  But do you understand my point?  By dismissing the idea that you can change someones life, or change something in the world around you, you are dismissing a lot more than what reality is for you right now.  

Even if what you are saying is true, and you really don't have anyone in your life who cares about you, to think that that will be your permanent place in the world is flawed.  You have yet to realize your potential.  

Additionally, I would be willing to bet that your estimate regarding the impact of your absence is off.  You seem way too smart and intuitive to not matter to anyone.

Finally, if you are having suicidal thoughts (I can't tell if you are, or this is just a bad combination of philosphy and depression), PM me right away.
