If a person fakes their death, and eventually gets caught for it, what would happen? (police wise)

Cause I'm watching "Sleeping with the Enemy", and she has good intentions, but would be get in trouble in the end?

I think theres been cases of where a spouse would join up and they'd fake ones death to get out of debt or get money. They've been sent to jail.
